Every once in awhile a great game comes along. I remember Impossible Mission for the C64 and Doom for the PC. There have been a few for the PPC platform. Curse of the Pharaohs (COTP) is a great game. COTP has bits of several types of games. There are elements of "jumping and shooting side scrollers" and "RPG" games. The game has lots of different puzzles. You can shoot the mummies and other creatures, hack them with machetes, and use levers to spear them remotely. You can dig up sand and relocate it to make bridges and steps.
There are also timed events (curses), where you need to find several items before time runs out. If time runs out you die. You must search every pot, sarcophagus and skeleton for objects. Some of the objects you can find are keys to unlock areas, bullets for your gun, machetes, dynamite and lots of other objects.
There?s an interesting back story to the game. You play the intrepid archaeologist Harold Huxley and your mission is to explore the ruins around the Nile in search of treasures. In the first level you learn how to climb, crouch, and jump. You need to learn how to dig sand then build bridges and steps with the sand. You also learn how much you can carry. Your health runs down as you run into hazards. If you run out of health, you die. You can find and use first aid kits during your adventures.
The AI is very smart, with creatures homing in on you when you?re close, but not getting stuck walking into walls. You collect experience points that increase your skill level with weapons. Between levels you go to the bazaar where you buy and sell items. The levels are massive, unique and very challenging.
Conclusion
Curse of the Pharaohs is near perfect in game play with great sounds, music and graphics. The game has a ?save at any time? feature and also an autosave at the start of each level.
My only complaint is more geared to game play on PPCs rather than the game itself. On my Dell the buttons are too small to accurately control the character at times. I had a hard time synchronizing a jump forward or jumping off a rope. Every once in awhile when I pushed one button, the side inventory menu would pop up. Their web site offers a hint page, but the hints aren?t posted yet. A few things I would love to see in the game are 1) more save slots and 2) a level editor.
If you want a fun game that will last you for hours, this is the game for you! At $9.95 you can not go wrong.
